Watch Your Sugar!

Some really good information about the amount of sugar in the foods we eat.  For years we've been taught to avoid fat.  And thus everything is low fat or less fat, to non-fat.  Those foods and ingredients lacking in fat also tend to lack in taste as well.  In order to compensate for the taste due to the lack of fat, many foods have added sugar and/or sodium which is why reading labels is key when selecting foods.

Take a review at this helpful link.  The information might seem a little overwhelming but its laid out in an easy-to-digest list of foods and the amount of sugar they each contain.  The key is to minimize excess sugar (otherwise known as bad carbs) in your diet as much as possible; and supply the body with the 'good' carbs for better overall health.

Remember you are changing (or upgrading) your lifestyle.  Eating well is more than a diet, it's a way of life.

The Healthiest State in the Union

You'll never believe which state was declared the healthiest state as of late.  According to the annual Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index that was recently released Hawaii was ranked the state with the highest well being.  In second place is North Dakota, then Minnesota, followed by Utah, Alaska, Colorado, and Kansas.  What I find funny is that the colder states appear to have better physical health,  mental stability and less stress and anxiety.   Really?

Quick Eats and Good for You Too!

  • In the dead of winter its good to have a meal that will "stick to your ribs" and get you through the day without making you feel sluggish or overloaded.  Try this simple recipe for a seafood stew.
  • Smoothies can be a great way to consume a meal or snack that's high in nutrients and some with a healthy protein content quick to prepare, good to the taste.  Here are several recipes to try, the one I find most interesting is the green tea recipe. These are quick, simple, to the point and full of potassium and nutrients.
1.  Green Tea
2.  Silken Tofu
3.  Pomegranate Juice
4.  Vanilla Kefir
5.  Kombucha
6.  Flaxseed
